English versionThe name of the youth house - Konfus - is very descriptive for the situation of many of the youngsters in the house. They are in a periode of their lives where they try to find their future education / job ore even their identity. All kind of young people from the age of 15 to 25 use the house.
In Denmark (and Esbjerg) there are many different associations offering sports activities, political activities and many other interesting subjects. But the statistic tells that young people’s involvement is decreasing. The youth house is an alternative to the formal association sector in the municipality, and is trying to encourage young people in the local society to get involved in youth projects and take responsibility for their own lives.
The house is based on involvement from the young people, concerning democracy, activities and responsibility. The youngsters run the activities themselves and at least 20 people have a key and a code for the alarmsystem, so they can keep the house open and close it. At the moment there are only one person employed.
The house offers an internet-café, a workshop where the young people can repair different things, a sitting room with TV, radio, games etc., and a studio where the youngsters can record and edit music. The booking-group have a good contact to many bands in our city and around the country and organize concert in the house approx every second weekend.
Esbjerg has a tradition for international co-operation and are constantly looking for collaborators for youth-exchange programmes etc.

KONFUS– the House for Youth Culture:
KONFUS is an informal meeting place and culture house for young people above the age of 15 that has been made available by the municipality of Esbjerg. KONFUS provides the framework for activities created by young people for other young people. A place where the imagination is allowed to play, or where you can just chill out if you need a break.
KONFUS is available both for people who are not, and people who are, active in other social associations in Esbjerg and is to be viewed as a supplement and an alternative to the more established activities that the city provides.
KONFUS is controlled by the users. This means that it is volunteers that keep the house open.
THE CODE WORDS OF THE HOUSE ARE:
- DEMOCRACY:
KONFUS arranges monthly common meetings, usually the first Wednesday in the month, where everyone is welcome. Here we plan and coordinate the upcoming activities and the budget is discussed and prioritized. Every user is being heard, and if you have an idea, you want other people to get in on; this is where you have to show up.
- RESPONSIBILITY:
KONFUS has an employed coordinator, but apart from that the house is user controlled. This means that there are about 20 volunteers, so-called key-holders, who contribute to keeping the house open. These are young people that have been using the house for an extended period of time. The house is only open when one of the key-holders is present. Besides from that it is expected that all the users of the house clean up after themselves, and lend a hand when it is needed. The somewhat ugly is connected to the very funny. Since the house is an educator-free area, we expect that the
users can live up to liberty with responsibility.
- GOOD TIMES:
As a starting point, it is the users themselves that make the activities happen. KONFUS has many different rooms, in which many activities can take place. A multiworkshop, a web cafe, a workshop, a TV-room with table football and pool table, a multi media computer, a recording studio and meeting rooms. Every young person can and use the rooms as part of an association or as a single person. You can call KONFUS if you want to book a room for a meeting, or get more information about the house.
THE RECORDING STUDIO:
KONFUS – the House for Youth Culture – has a studio where young bands from Esbjerg and the surrounding areas can record a demo cd. We have volunteer studio technicians that can assist with the technical stuff. If you have a studio technician inside you waiting to come out, you are also very welcome. In the house we have a rule that, if you get a cd recorded, you have to play a concert.
CONCERTS:
The booking group for the house puts together concerts about every other weekend. There is a small entrance fee to the concerts, but then on the other hand you can party all night long. We try to get many different kinds of bands to play, because the house for youth culture wants to make room for all kinds of music. You are welcome to take part in work of the booking group to arrange concerts. It is not as easy as you might think. - Sunday till Thursday: Between midnight and 8 AM.
- Friday till Saturday: Between 2 AM and 8 AM.
